AltFreq Weekly Planner (12/7-12/10)

Written by Kevin Madert

It’s nearly impossible to keep track of all the events going on in the area, so we’re here to let you know what’s happening in live music over the next few days. Watch out on Thursdays for the “Weekend Planner” where we’ll cover the most important 72 hours of the week.

Sunday 12/7

DC

(SOLD OUT) Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue @ 930 Club – (Info)

(ALTFREQ PICK) Common @ Fillmore Silver Spring – Intelligent hip-hop is a fast-dwindling commodity these days. If you’re looking for a rapper with something to say beyond money drugs and girls, head to the Fillmore to catch a legend with more than two decades of experience behind the mic. (Tickets)

Lagwagon @ Black Cat – (Tickets / Info)

Monday 12/8

Baltimore

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue @ Rams Head Live – (Tickets / Info)

Tuesday 12/9

DC

The Head & The Heart @ DAR Constitution Hall – (Tickets / Info)

Baltimore

(ALTFREQ PICK) Modern Baseball @ Baltimore Soundstage – Pop-punk has experienced a nice little renaissance in the past few years, and perhaps much of that can be credited to its sonic evolution. Sure, acts like All Time Low are still succeeding with their straightforward approach – and it’s not to say I don’t enjoy it – but some up-and-comers have ditched the over-produced sheen and lyrical simplicity for more in-depth topics and genuine, relatable emotions. Modern Baseball is decidedly the latter, and this show – moved from the Fillmore Silver Spring to the much more intimate Baltimore Soundstage – is sure to be a good one. (Tickets / Info)

Wednesday 12/10

DC

(ALTFREQ PICK) Robert Randolph and The Family Band @ 930 Club – Every year around now, Robert Randolph finds himself in the District with his family in tow (and yes, the members of his band are actually all related to him). I’d wonder about the repetitive nature of the bookings year after year if the group didn’t put on one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Funk meets soul meets blues meets rock in a whirlwind of rollicking, foot-stomping bliss, all helmed by Randolph and his unmatched virtuosity on the pedal steel guitar. Can’t emphasize enough that this is a can’t miss. (Tickets / Info)

Natalie Merchant @ The Lincoln Theatre – (Tickets / Info)

Tube & Berger @ U Street Music Hall – (Tickets / Info)

Baltimore

Chevelle @ Rams Head Live – (Tickets / Info)
