Music Journalism Done Differently

AltFreq Weekly Planner (11/16-11/19)

AltFreq Weekly Planner (11/16-11/19)

Written by Kevin Madert

This is the first in a segment we hope to run weekly for the good people of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. It’s nearly impossible to keep track of all the events going on in the area, so we’re here to let you know what’s happening in live music over the next few days. Watch out on Thursday for the “Weekend Planner” where we’ll cover the most important 72 hours of the week. S/o to friend of the blog Jared Oppenheim for the solid suggestion.

Sunday 11/16

DC

(ALTFREQ PICK) Savant @ U Street Music Hall – With a “fuck genres” attitude and a Buckethead like output, albeit armed with a laptop rather than a guitar, Savant is a man not to be trifled with. Often hidden behind his trademark mask and armed with a limitless musical library, you can bet this is going to be a hell of a Sunday night on U Street. (Tickets / Info)

TV On The Radio @ 930 Club (SOLD OUT) – (Info)

Monday 11/17

DC

In This Moment @ The Fillmore Silver Spring – (Tickets)

Baltimore

Powerman 5000 @ Soundstage – (Tickets / Info)

Tuesday 11/18

DC

(ALTFREQ PICK) Jacques Greene @ Black Cat – Despite his steady rise in the general consciousness of the well-informed masses, this Canadian born New-York based talent remains a relative enigma. His talents are no mystery though, and with a deft ear Greene delves into the melodic and minimal side of house and techno, lifting crowds up without the fanfare and massive production so many DJs seem to need these days to get their fans moving. Black Cat is an interesting choice of venue for this show, and in this writer’s opinion it’ll make for that much more interesting of an experience. (Tickets / Info)

Baltimore

(ALTFREQ PICK) John Butler Trio @ Rams Head Live – From the way he commands audiences’ attention and sells out venues small and large the world over, you’d hardly believe John Butler’s musical career began over a decade ago busking in the streets of Freemantle, Australia. In the years since, he’s gathered his eponymous Trio, released a slew of hit albums, and changed the way many people – this writer included – look at the acoustic guitar. The price tag might seem steep, but one view of the video below should convince you it’s well worth it. (Tickets / Info)

Wednesday 11/19

DC

(ALTFREQ PICK) Ryan Hemsworth @ U Street Music Hall – Master of the minimal, with one foot in the present and the other planted firmly about ten years in the future, Ryan Hemsworth is just as entertaining live as his virtual self is on social media – and that’s saying something. From groovy to bassy to downright weird, a set from Hemsworth is a roller-coaster ride that often sojourns into  the weird dark corners of electronica – which he somehow still manages to make danceable and (more importantly) satisfying. (Tickets / Info)

We Were Promised Jetpacks @ 930 Club – (Tickets / Info)

Alt-J @ Echostage – (Tickets / Info)

Andrea & Tommy Jacobs @ Flash – (Tickets / Info)

Baltimore

ELM @ The 8×10 – (Tickets)
