In Case You Missed It: The Boundless Soundscapes Of Unlimited Gravity’s “Event Horizon”

Written by Kevin Madert

Colorado product Unlimited Gravity – real name Ronnie Weberg –  has never seemed content remaining in one place musically. Beginning with his earliest self-released material (still available on his Bandcamp), the producer/DJ has displayed a keen ear for unique sounds and fresh styles. It’s led to a string of LPs with little sonic overlap and high replay value for Weberg; with his latest, Event Horizon,  it’s clear that streak has been extended.

The album – released back in February via 1320 Records – is one of the best offerings of 2015. The hour-long, ten-track collection pinballs through the genre spectrum, conjuring up a variety of atmospherics that are woven together by Unlimited Gravity’s unmistakable production presence. In addition to the copious quantities of glitch and dubstep, we’re given everything from drum ‘n’ bass (“Source Energy” has plenty of double-time energy) to dubby downtempo house (“Something Special” is sultry and hard-edged in equal measure).

These songs work because they’re engaging, often taking almost their entire run time to fully unfold. There’s minimal repetition, as Weberg’s deft touch facilitates forward progress throughout the album. This is especially impressive when length is considered: the shortest track on Event Horizon clocks in at just over five minutes. Instead of writing songs with duplicate front and back ends, we see an artist pushing himself further; the result is a collection of compositions colored by well-tempered layering and constant evolution.

This combination of unwavering work ethic and innovative production approach makes it no surprise Weberg is a familiar name on his home turf. He regularly performs in the Colorado area both alone and with various members of The Mile High Sound Club, a Denver-based artist collective of which he is the Vice President. He’s also made inroads across the country, performing sets solo or tag-teaming as Unlimited Aspect with fellow Mile High member Project Aspect. In either case, his sets are always non-repeating and comprised entirely of original material.

And when your original material sounds like this, you’d be crazy to play anything else. Event Horizon is an album conceived, written, and released with willful ignorance of genre or popular opinion. This confident fearlessness is sure to behoove Weberg as he continues his steady climb up the EDM ladder.
